The Niwot Community Semi-Marching Free Grange Band
Meet Our Musicians--Band Member Bios
Name: Lee Shaw
Instrument: Baton and Organ
Uniform Selection: Fresno State...but it's really the hat!
Lee Shaw is one of the founding members of the Niwot Community Semi-Marching Free Grange Band. He began his NCSMFGB career as equipment manager, back-up conductor, and back-up drummer at the July 4, 2005 Niwot bandstand dedication. Soon afterwards, he took over the duties of directing the band, and has faithfully led the band in every performance since then. “I am semi-conductor of the band based on availability, not skill,” he reports.
In addition to conducting, Lee plays the drums, tympani and keyboards. He also furnishes chairs for the band’s performances, creates banners, and decorates the band’s flatbed trailer for parades. He always seems to have a spare music stand whenever one is needed.
Lee is also a theatre organ fan and promoter, and has been known to recruit NCSMFGB members to perform for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society (check out www.RMCATOS.org).
He lives west of Niwot, and is a 26-year resident of Colorado. Although he grew up in Woodstock, it was not the Woodstock of Yasgur’s Farm and Jimi Hendrix, but rather, Woodstock, Illinois. He began his musical career in Woodstock in the 6th grade, because, “I wanted to be in the band.”
Lee played in the Woodstock Community High School Band & Orchestra, then went on to play in the band and ROTC Drum and Bugle Corps at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. He also played with the Minot, North Dakota Community Orchestra while stationed there in the Air Force. In his other life, Lee is a computer printing consultant, having formerly worked for IBM before becoming self-employed. His favorite band experience is “doing the parades and seeing the enjoyment in the crowd.”
