Name: Joe Kunches

Instrument: Drums

Uniform Selection:

Joe Kunches is the regular drummer for the Niwot Community Semi-Marching Free Grange Band, taking over the duties from Doug Carpenter after Doug’s graduation from Niwot High.

Joe grew up in St. Charles, Illinois, where he played in a garage band known as he legendary “Lost Years” during high school.  He explains, “The Beatles made the garage band wannabe’s mandatory for my generation.”

In addition to the drums, Joe also plays guitar and banjo.  He had a long layoff before joining the Niwot Community Semi-Marching Free Grange Band, but quickly returned to form. Joe does not read drum music, so everything you hear comes from practice, and familiarity with the music.

Joe has been a Colorado resident for 35 years, and makes his home in Niwot. A former teacher, he has been a scientist for the Space Weather Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Boulder for many years.  He’s often featured in the media whenever weather-related issues arise. Joe’s favorite song is Zoot Suit Riot because it has “lots of drums.” His favorite band experience is listening to Semi-Conductor Lee Shaw’s jokes.

A little known fact about Joe is that he is a former owner of the Boston Celtics basketball team. Joe admits, “Okay, actually a minority interest during the Larry Bird years—okay, ten shares worth.”
