The Niwot Community Semi-Marching Free Grange Band

Meet Our Musicians--Band Member Bios

Name: Bruce "Biff" Warren

Instrument: Trombone

Uniform Selection--(at one time or another):

Bruce “Biff” Warren is one of the original members of the Niwot Community Semi-Marching Free Grange Band.  When the bandstand at Niwot’s Whistle Stop Park was due to be dedicated at the 2005 Fourth of July celebration, the only thing missing was…. a band!  Biff placed an ad in the Left Hand Valley Courier, recruiting several local musicians to join with a few Niwot High School students to form a 14-member community band. As they say, the rest is history…

Biff took piano lessons in second grade for one semester, but they ended when the piano teacher became pregnant. He then took up the trombone in fourth grade.  “My mom played saxophone, and my dad played trombone; I noticed that the trombones got to march in the front of the band,” he explains. Biff played in the Creighton (Nebraska) Community Schools Band, under the direction of Duane Booth, a member of the Nebraska Music Education Hall of Fame.  He also played trombone in the school’s Stage Band, starting in 7th grade.

Biff went on to play in the Cornhusker Marching Band at the University of Nebraska, and regularly returns to play in the NU Alumni Band. “When I was there it was 180 marching men, known as ‘Jack’s Boys.’ The year after I left they allowed women to join. The football team won 2 national championships when I was there.”

He also played guitar in high school with a rock ‘n roll band known as The Conspiritors. “We played for dances and proms in northeast Nebraska and southeast South Dakota in the mid-1960’s.” He now plays guitar and keyboards with a classic rock band, On Fire, which also includes Niwot Community Semi-Marching Free Grange Band member Mike Weiss on bass.

Biff came to Niwot 36 years ago from Nebraska. In his day job he’s an attorney with Warren, Carlson & Moore, LLP in Niwot.  He also serves as the Managing Editor for the Left Hand Valley Courier and coaches baseball as an assistant at Niwot High.

His favorite Band song is Bill Bailey because “it has great glissandos.”

His favorite band experience? “Playing with my daughter Katie in the Community Band, and playing with my son Michael in his band, Legitimate By Friday, in San Francisco.”
