Meet Our Musicians--Band Member Bios

Name: Bill Lewis

Instrument: Baritone Saxophone

Uniform Selection--at one time or another:

Bill grew up in a family of musicians in Oxnard, CA, and began playing an instrument at the age of 4.  His brother is a full-time studio musician in Las Vegas. Bill played off and on through high school and college, and played professionally with his brother’s jazz combo to help pay for college.  He has also played professionally with several jazz and R&B groups in the Bay area of California.

In addition to Bari Sax, Bill also plays Tenor, Alto and Soprano Saxophone and doubles on flute, clarinet, vocals and drums. Bill has played with the Rio Mesa High School Jazz Band, Roubideaux Bluegrass Band, a Church orchestra, and several jazz groups in the Southern California area, including a Salsa Band at UCLA called “UCLAtino.” He has also played with several big bands, including the Rocky Mountain Christian Church Big Band. Bill’s enthusiasm for music is contagious. “There’s no such thing as a bad gig,” he said.

Bill has lived in Niwot for the last 16 years.  He has performed professionally for the past 35 years.  “I have a jazz group that plays private and public gigs called LeftHand Jazz,” he said. “I’m blessed to be playing with some of the best jazz players in Boulder County.”

In his other life, Bill recently retired after serving as VP of Sales for several Silicon Valley companies, including Brocade Communications (early founder), Silicon Graphics, and IBM. Bill has a great family and both of his kids are outstanding musicians as well. He enjoys being retired and not traveling for a living! Bill said, “My other source of sanity, outside of music, is golf.”

His favorite song is Squibb Cakes, by Tower of Power, because it has “the best bari sax riff of all time, by the greatest band of all time!”
